Day Yum
Hate to do it, but I’m going to start this blog off with a confession.
This isn’t really Yumsicle’s “Day One”.
But I mean, if we’re all being honest with ourselves, none of our “Day One”s really are. Goals are made with hard work, brainstorming, dreaming, careful consideration, and a lot of giant mistakes. No one just wakes up and conquers the world. The good stuff takes time.
So let’s look at Yumsicle and where we really started.
If we go back to 2022, my wife and I started a content marketing agency that focused on empathetic marketing (a concept which I’ve come to both solidly still support and also think is about as real as an abominable snowman). We worked with a team of talented misfits to change the world… one bullshit blog post about AI at a time. We triumphed at conferences. We hosed our bank account. It was a high win/high loss situation but we kept going because we really thought we could change the world. Yumsicle has that.
If we go back to 2021, my wife and I started a biscuit business. Yes, biscuits. We had a cute little gingham logo and a few well refined recipes. We sold on Facebook marketplace (totally legit) and borrowed my aunt’s deep freezer. I still remember the overwhelming “Dang, we’re really doing something.” when we reinvested our first weekend’s profits and I got a second pastry cutter. It was $12. But we did it, and we had fun together. That creative excitement we both got from triple checking recipes and delighting people, that was something. Yumsicle has that.
If we go back to 2020, my wife and I got out of a rough relationship we were in. We were free-loving polyamorists at the time, hell bent on breaking societal norms and bringing community care back to everyday living. The idea was charming until you realized that intimacy was more than just sharing resources, it was also sharing trauma. Through that time though we built the bones of the greatest relationship my life has ever had all while another one crumbled away. I learned what true love was, and wasn’t, and that it had something to do with this silly little thing called Faith. Yumsicle has that.
Some days when I think about where we’re going I get overwhelmed. I want great things for this silly little business of ours. I want to hold a box of our popsicles in the frozen aisle of Publix and install a bubble machine at our corporate office. I want to invest in great people and delightful experiences. I want to have a seat at the table of world change and smile at the people sitting there. And when that end goal seems about a million miles away, I have to remember that even our Day One has been a long time coming. Life’s greatest journies don’t really have a starting point.
